Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speaker. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which is a website with video content and blogs discussing the depictions of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. She is the creator and executive director of Feminist Frequency, a not-for-profit educational website that explores representations of women's roles in popular cultural narratives. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they appear in popular culture. Furthermore, she seeks to educate people about cyber-bullying targeting women and marginalized groups of people. Holding a master's degree in politics and sociology at York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public speaker and she has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. From an early age Sarkeesian was interested in questions of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009, she founded the Feminist Frequency site. Someone who was ambitious planned to create a web-series that would examine the role of gender within games. But, she discovered herself as the victim of an internet harassment campaign. This attack didn't stop her from pursuing the project, and instead reinforced her resolve as feminist critique of the media. She has won numerous awards due to her significant contributions to the world of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won numerous awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational company that examines the ways women are portrayed in popular culture narratives.
